Artist Statement

Metal is a medium in which so many other practices are found. Drawing, painting, sculpture, and textiles can all come together to create objects that withstand the test of time, age only identifiable by trends in history or a patina that’s easily buffed out.  These ancient techniques were used for thousands of years before my existence and will hopefully continue for thousands of years after. For this reason, metalwork feels infinite. It allows me to memorialize an object in a way that could last forever. That object can be destroyed by human hand or it can be cherished and sacred, living on forever through the collective human experience; much like the planet we live on. I am endlessly inspired by the breadth of possibilities, while also feeling like I can never stay in one place artistically.

I like to use organic imagery to show that nature should inspire to create, rather than destroy. At first my work was simply inspired by the beauty of nature, but it has evolved to show more awareness of the current environmental issues. A lot of my work focuses on the effects of climate change and environmental destruction. Often, my pieces take on a surreal quality, but are rooted in real environmental issues and the possible outcomes of those issues left unchecked. I like to use muted color schemes to show a lack of life in the piece, but sometimes add pops of color as a reminder that it’s not too late to return to a a land of vibrancy and abundance. The widespread coral bleaching in 2016 and 2017 made me confront the earth’s mortality and how we are rapidly contributing to its decline. Creating this work comes from a place of helplessness and sadness while I watch the greed of corporations destroy this planet. It helps me come to terms with how the world may change in my own lifetime.

I am interested in creating texture and pattern through piercing and negative space. I use the metal as a canvas on which to draw detailed designs with my saw, allowing negative space to become the focal point of my work. This creates a composition that feels fractured and fragile like the environment that I am trying to portray.
